More Drivel! ; ) [15 Mar 2010|12:29am]

The burglars are about locally, and they are simply the scum of the earth in my opinion. During Thursday night they forced the front door open at a house just a few doors away whilst the owners were asleep, they opened a few drawers, took an old mobile phone, and then the cat got out, it is not supposed to be out on its own as it needs medication of some sort....apart from feeling a bit violated, the guy was relieved that nothing valuable was taken, and the cat returned the next day too.

On the same night another house was broken into in a nearby street, a van containing many tools was stolen, along with the family car. On top of that, we have just found out that our new neighbours had an attempted break in recently. They had an old escort van parked against their garage door, but the van cannot be locked aparently. The would-be thieves moved the van back, but failed to get into the garage, due to it being very securely locked down.

These people are worthless scum, and it makes you wonder what the world is coming to. Our own garage here is locked and is full of junk!...but as a further security measure, we have jammed each side solid with the wooden poles from our ancient seaside windbreak!...nobody will get the bloody door open now, that is for sure. ; )

Ray was concerned to hear about the recent spate of break-ins, and this is what prompted me to buy him a PIR security lamp for his birthday!...okay, not a very exciting gift, but a useful thing to have to put off potential crooks these days. We decided to fit it on the wall during Sunday afternoon, and as usual, Shydave was lacking in one or two essential tools for the job!

Ray had borrowed a mains powered drill from his brother for the project, and I managed to blag a bloody great big masonry drill bit from my neighbour to drill through the wall...my Dad supplied one of those gadgets that detects mains cables within a wall, so that was also very handy indeed. We have an old wooden step ladder thing here at home which gave us the required working height, so then all systems were go! : )

We eventually got it all fixed up, and after a bit of tweaking of the three preset controls, it is almost set up perfectly now, we need to see how it performs during the week though....

In other news, a new documentary series started on BBC2 at 8pm on Sunday, "Tropic of Cancer" by Simon Reeve is a 6 part series, each part being an hour long, which tells the story of his travels along the line of the tropic of cancer, and tonights episode was, as always, very interesting. If you missed it, do check it out on the BBC iplayer!....Simon covers the stories which the tourists would not normally see, and he always does so with humour and passion. His favourite remark is "Bloody Hell!"......He says it at least once in every programme!...so go and watch it if you can!

More Rants and Witterings! ; ) [10 Mar 2010|12:12am]

This country is going downhill FAST....it is rare for Shydave to comment on such things on his journal, but he is getting increasingly cheesed off with the way things are going here in the UK. The roads are literally falling apart, and the councils just make excuses!....in several places round here there are enormous great chasms in the middle of the road, and nothing is done about them. The article in the local paper the other week about serious potholes by the shops which featured my father got a lot of attention, but the council simply put some temporary dirt type stuff in the hole, which is now falling out again, and they plan to "resurface the area" when the budgets are agreed by the summer!....it wouldn't ever happen in a country like Switzerland or somewhere I bet...

Health & Safety has gone mad....people aren't allowed to cook for each other in sheltered housing complexes in case someone gets injured, risk assessments have to be completed for the most basic of public events, hard hats must be worn at ALL times, even in the Library...

I jest a little there, but you know what I am getting at. With a general election in the pipeline very soon, there is no party out there which I would be happy to vote for, as not one of them ticks all the boxes on my voting sheet. And what the hell are we doing in Afghanistan?....each day there is another report of a soldier who has been lost whilst on foot patrol. Why are we doing foot patrols in the first place?...why not drive one of those sodding great big tank things with flailing chains in front of them along the roads with IED devices, that should blow the bastards up!

It annoys me intensely that we are involved in crap like this, which is nothing to do with us.

After that rather political rant, I will calm down a bit now. There is still no work around here, and the phone doesn't ring at the moment. I spend endless hours online, and I have been collecting very obscure routes and rolling stock for my Microsoft Train Simulator, which is fun to use if you are a train buff and geeky type like me. You might recall that I got hold of a copy of the later release of "Rail Simulator" the other week quite cheaply on eBay. I had a go with it, but it was crap, and today I uninstalled it completely! ; )

What is it with older people?...I hate to have a whinge about my parents bless them, but there are one or two things cropping up here at home which are beginning to irritate me a little bit lately. I should make it clear from the outset that they live here with ME, and not the other way round as is usually the case. My brother who lives in Grimsby and myself own the house, and the oldies happen to live here as "hangers on", which I suppose is unusual nowadays....but generally speaking the system works okay, I get me washing done free of charge, and several meals each week suddenly appear in front of me at the appropriate times...

The problem is, that for some reason, the powers that be have decided that....the BATHROOM DOOR NOW HAS TO BE SHUT!....all day long too, and so after each time I go to the seperate toilet room that we have here, I then go into the bathroom to wash my hands or something, and it is freezing cold in there!

I have one question.....WHY ON EARTH DO THIS?

I was due to have a quick bath at 5.30pm this evening, and I saw that the door was shut again at about 5pm, so I opened it to warm the place up a bit for half an hour. I went to have my bath at the usual time, and by then somebody had sneaked along and closed the bloody door again!...what is the BLOODY POINT of all this? ...if it carries on, I am going to fall out with them, that is almost a certainty.

In brighter news, my lil 6 year old nephew has been hoping for some time that I would make him a tiger to go with all of his other paper models that I have given him in the past!...I have finally started to make him one, fortunately there is an excellent model of one on the Canon 3D Papercraft site, so I downloaded the files and printed it all out....here is the progress thus far!...it is looking quite good I reckon.

Another Week ; ) [08 Mar 2010|12:28am]

shydave
[ mood | enthralled ]

I have found it very hard to find anything worth writing about of late, had you noticed? ; )

Phone rings....

"Dave!...its Matt the Doughnut Man"

Matt sells doughnuts at the local car boot sale, he is a fairly pleasant chap, but one who I have never made any money out of, so I was expecting the worst...

"I don't know if you get involved with them or not..." (Won't make any money here methinks)

"My TOASTER!"

"Nah. I don't DO toasters."

"Do you not?....I thought that if it was just a simple thing...."

"Nah. People buy a new toaster when their old toaster packs up in these modern times Matt"

"Well, I put my finger in the slot, and now it keeps blowing the fuses. They are only £20 new though in the shops...."

"You need a trip to Argos"

pleasantries dutifully exchanged, Matt rings off.

So what the bloody hell did he think I would charge him to look at it, had I wanted to, when he knew that they were only £20 to buy new in the shops?....a FIVER?....£7.50 perhaps?...I just don't understand the people who live round here these days, they simply haven't got a bloody clue.

The "Job of the Week" this last week was to visit a customer of mine who has the misfortune to have an aerial which is pointing towards the Oxford transmitter, which is not really our main local UHF transmitter of course!...where we are here in South Bedfordshire, the main source of signal is the Sandy Heath transmitter near Biggleswade, some 25 miles or so away from here. Unknown to the customer, the Oxford transmitter is currently having work done on it for future Freeview services, and so they are using a reserve transmitter on reduced power.

A message came up on their nice Panasonic TV which said that it needed a retune, so they did one!...after that, ITV1 and Channel 4 went AWOL, as did several other stations. The fact is that these signals are not there to receive at the moment due to the lack of transmitter power, so all I did was go along, and confirm that they would have to wait until early April to get them all back again!...they do have a Sky box though, so it ain't the end of the world.

On the domestic front, Ray had a nice quiet birthday at home on Wednesday. I went round with a bottle of wine, a birthday card, a packet of four 60W BC candle bulbs and a security light with a PIR detector all wrapped up (don't ask!) ...and a home-made birthday boy badge for him to wear! ; )

We then went out for a walk around the estate, it wasn't that far really, and we cut through the CEMETERY on the way back! (way to go, on your birthday huh?) ...but the next day I had an ache in my left foot which has now fortunately subsided. He still doesn't look a day over 30 bless him...

This is my latest modelmaking project!...DON'T laugh!...yep, two paper canaries in a paper cage!

And here is a close-up of the two paper lovebirds on their paper perch:

How many 47 year old gay men do YOU know who would make such things?...answers on a postcard to... ; )
